Flourish
2025

The Flourish breezeblock is inspired by the flows and curves of the Art Nouveau move- ment. Tapping on the tendrils and sweeps that characterise the works of Hector Guimard and Josef Maria Olbrich, it balances organic forms with geometric directionality such that it can be rotated and mirrored to create dynamic ornamanetal patterning. The breezeblock’s gesture follows a Truchet diagonal to offer movement and patterning through different configurations, some of which are shown below.

While Flourish can be cast in a series of different materials, this prototype was done in an oyster-based mycelium. The process started with a Rhino model of the form, followed by CNC of the form's front and back in foam. This was then vacuum formed to yield a PET-G mould. Mycelium was then cast in this mould, podded and placed in the drying chamber over a week long process to form the final breezeblock.
