Sate
2019

Urban dwellers make an average of 227 food decisions in a day. With endless arrays of options, these add up to a heavy sense of decision fatigue, especially when trying to dine out as a group. How might we simplify the dining selection process to make it efficient and engaging? Sate is a food community app based on the idea of gathering and exploration. Users can use the platform to set up gatherings and select dining locations, explore themed collections and join communities to share word of mouth recommendations.

Since Sate intends to simplify the selection process, a key challenge was to distill information into digestible bites. To present hierarchy and organisation, I used a 25px grid as my basis, along with sub-pages and cards to delineate different sections in order of priority. I kept most of the text and icons to monochrome tones as well as generally flatter appearances to focus users on the restaurant visuals. For accents, I incorporated rustic shades including forest green for connotations of nature and maroon for depth and inspiration.
The final user flow consisted of over 25 screens, encompassing the onboarding and registration flows and three main use cases: searching for dining options, organising gatherings and finding community. Features included dynamic options based on diner parameters, creating mapped collections and reviews, and social networking through groups, messaging and following individuals.
