Inspired by the ritual of markers and memorialisation, Cairn is a waisted form that references the tension of solidity and delicate balance in stone mounds. With openings on either end, it is invertable and modularly compatible with other pieces of matching dimensions. A matching base and stem allows the inverted form to be used as a skyward table lamp. Variations feature handcarving and a sealed bottom turn it into a vase.

Given the delicate waist on its form, the biggest challenge for Cairn was to determine the appropriate timing to balance a piece that had thickened sufficiently while ensuring that the weight of the topmost portion would not crush the waist or the base. With enough practice, demolding the piece at the right time also allowed carving and finishing to explore other variations off the same base form.
